A Tribute to Alan Mann, AG®

1138945552Alan Edward Mann, an Accredited Genealogist® professional who worked for FamilySearch for over 25 years, passed away on Friday, 23 February 2018 after a five-year battle with cancer.  Alan was accredited for research in the countries of England and Australia.   He was well-liked by patrons and employees at the Family History Library and was a popular speaker and teacher at major genealogy conferences, Brigham Young University, and Salt Lake Community College.
An excerpt from his obituary states, “Alan studied accounting at Brigham Young University and began working as an accountant in 1973 and worked for Wisdom Manufacturing. He owned a collectables [sic] shop for 11 years, and then as an accredited genealogist, he worked in the Family History Department of the LDS Church until he retired in 2017. In this career, he worked as a British Research Consultant and in many other positions and was a key player in creating Family Search and the Family Search Wiki. He was extremely influential in integrating technology with Family History, making many program suggestions for the LDS Family History Department.

Not only was family history his profession, it was his passion. Alan was involved in multiple genealogical associations, including National Genealogical Society and Utah Genealogical Association (UGA). He served on the UGA Board. He was a highly popular lecturer across the United States and overseas on technology in Family History. He considered his greatest professional achievement to be helping to establish the genealogy and technology conference now known as RootsTech.”

Funeral Services will be held Thursday March 1, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the Anthem Ward LDS Chapel at 5658 W. Yukon Park Lane (12200 S.), Herriman, Utah 84065.There will be a viewing on Wednesday, February 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m in the Walnut Hills Ward LDS Chapel 5938 W 6200 S, Kearns. The family will receive visitors Thursday March 1, 2018 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will follow in Springville, Utah’s Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alan can be made to Huntsman Cancer Institute, Children’s Miracle Network, or Autism Speaks.
